Nowadays, websites need to be able to respond quickly and be able to keep users engaged. It is now expected that forms do not require a full page refresh upon submission, files upload with a progress indicator and data is refreshed or populated based on user actions.

AJAX and jQuery can be used in PHP applications to achieve this kind of interactivity without requiring a complete rewrite of an application using a large JavaScript framework. A backend written in PHP can be combined with AJAX to let webpages update their content and interact with the backend asynchronously.

What Makes AJAX Useful in PHP Applications?

AJAX makes it possible for a web page to exchange information with the server asynchronously. This means that while making the request, the whole page does not have to be reloaded; the response from the server is just updated in a particular part of the interface using JavaScript.

This approach is useful for many everyday features, including:

Form submissions.
File uploads.
Search interfaces.
Data filtering.
User notifications.
Dynamic tables.
Content updates.

jQuery can make these operations easier by providing convenient methods for sending AJAX requests and handling their responses.

Improving File Uploads with AJAX

File uploads are a prime example of asynchronous communication. A standard upload can leave the user waiting for the server to finish processing. Using AJAX to upload files is a great way to give the user additional feedback on the progress of the upload. One way to do this is through a simple progress bar.

Any developer wishing to implement this sort of feature can look at this practical example code of AJAX file upload with progress bar as inspiration. It shows a simple implementation of AJAX uploading using a progress bar to inform the user of the percentage uploaded.

Submitting Forms Without Reloading the Page

Forms are another way to integrate AJAX into your application. Usual form submission will reload a page or take you to another one. This may not be the best thing for simple applications that need speed.

By using AJAX and JavaScript, we can send form data directly to PHP scripts and show the response on the page with ease

This is great for contact forms, log in/log out scripts, registration, feedback forms, and administrative panels. You avoid reloads of the entire page by only including PHP code that needs to be refreshed.

This practical implementation of AJAX form submission with jQuery and PHP provides a useful starting point for understanding how these technologies can work together

Displaying Large Amount of Data Dynamically

Administrative applications often have to display much data. A common way to do that is to render it in HTML tables. However, hundreds or thousands of records can make such a table hard to use and impact the application’s performance.

Dynamic data tables feature search, sort, pagination, and filtering capabilities. These tables help to work with large datasets and increase the productivity of administrative applications.

The implementation of dynamic tables can be further improved by using AJAX to fetch data from the server. Instead of loading all the data at once, which can slow down the application, the requests to the server can be made in real time.

PHP and jQuery developers can take a closer look at the example of jQuery DataTables with AJAX in PHP to see how to implement the AJAX requests and build an interface for working with large datasets on the server.

More Practical Web Development Examples

Learning AJAX becomes simpler by making relevant connections between the concept and possible development applications. Having covered all the individual topics like async forms, file upload, and dynamic table, one might be interested in learning other PHP and JavaScript approaches utilizing the request and response model.
